Steel manufacturers have requested for a robust quality assurance system by way of adopting regional standards in the sector.Speaking during the East African Community secretary general, Dr Richard Sezibera’s tour of the company, Roofings Group chairman Sikander Lalani said: “We request the region to put in place a robust quality assurance system by way of adopting regional standards in the steel sector as well as putting in place a level playing field in tax administration.”He said a level playing field will help to harmonise the tax administration among the member states in order to reduce the cost of doing business.Mr Lalani told the secretary general various issues that must be addressed at the regional level in order to boost the growth of the steel sector.Among them is an increase in the EAC Common External Tariff (CET) on galvanised wire to 25 per cent in the region in order to protect the local producers. Read more
Roofing Group: Lalani set for Leaders’ forum
An open forum like this one will always encourage entrepreneurship. Pooling leaders from all sectors into an open discussion will bring up a lot of new ideas on leadership. In this way, we can learn from each other by sharing our stories, our way of positioning our businesses in a way that ensures sustainability even in tough economic circumstances. What I believe is that with good people and the right vision, no situation can be to challenging to overcome as long as we utilise the available resources effectively. The speakers and invited panelists invited all seem to have a lot of experience, it will be great for the participants to learn from people of that ilk who have hands-on experience, and who have succeeded in ‘riding the wave’ rather than being negatively affected by it. Read more
Roofing Group:Steel manufacturer says power surges caused Shs3b losses
Steel manufacturer, Roofings Group, has said it has lost equipment worth of $1.2 million (Shs3.1 billion) over the last 10 months due to power surges. The Group technical director, Mr Sheikh Arif, said he believes the surges were caused by lightning strikes to electrical sub-stations, which distribute power to businesses and homes, as well as old equipment at the sub stations.Another likely cause of the unstable power, according to the manufacturer, may be the erratic use of electricity, such as turning large motors on and off abruptly by neighbouring factories in the Namanve Industrial Area, he said.“It is not power cuts, it is the power spikes,” Mr Arif said, clarifying the alleged source of his company’s losses to reporters and parliamentarians at the Namanve factory.Read more
